Despite liking some of the new changes, Giselle must race against time to reverse the spell and figure out what her happily ever after really looks like. Will Smith’s first movie since “the slap,”Emancipation follows the true-life story of a slave’s harrowing journey toward freedom. Inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter,” taken during a Union Army medical examination, the film follows Peter as he risks his life to escape bondage and return to his family. Relying on his wits and faith, Peter evades bounty hunters amid the swamps of Louisiana to reunite with the ones he loves.

It’s inspiring, hopeful, and vital viewing for anyone who cares about democracy.

There are comedies and dramas, documentaries and sci-fi, animation and inspiration, horror and romance, and a lot more. The danger has been that there are so many big movies coming out all the time and we were always jostling for place.

That’s why I recommended to Fox that we push “Titanic” till Christmas, because we’d have a clear playing field in January and February, and that worked out beautifully. The same strategy worked well with “Home Alone.” And of course we’re going into the same date with “The Way of Water.” But we’re not jostling as much now because there aren’t as many big tentpoles. To help reacquaint audiences with “Home Alone” — and with the 3-D filmmaking that dazzled audiences in 2009 — the first movie is being rereleased in theaters on Sept. 23. It’s a strategy that is, of course, intended to prime ticket buyers for the impending follow-up, but also to remind them of what was special about the original. The Sea Beast joins Netflix's collection of stellar family-friendly animated adventures. A young girl named Maisie (Zaris-Angel Hator) stows away on the ship of sea monster hunter Captain Crow , becoming wrapped up in a thrilling journey through uncharted waters. Bringing originality to the high seas and swashbuckling characters, The Sea Beast is a must-watch chapter of enchanting fantasy. Hulu waited until after Halloween to fill the library with horror movies, but it was well worth the wait. The onslaught of horror is headlined by George C. Romero’s 1968 classic. When corpses begin to come back to life and leave the graveyard in search of fresh human meat, the pragmatic Ben leads a group to barricade themselves in an old farmhouse.

First released a decade ago, The Social Network was a prescient and smart white-knuckler, maybe the best Aaron Sorkin has written to this day. The Other Lamb (from director Małgorzata Szumowska) is eerie and starkly beautiful. The film melds two familiar territories for horror — cults and women’s bodies — into one dread-soaked Bildungsroman, centered on teenaged Selah .

An appealing animated adventure whose silliness is anchored in genuine emotion, The Willoughbys offers fanciful fun the entire family can enjoy. High Flying Bird takes a thoughtful and engrossing look at professional sports that sees Steven Soderbergh continuing to test the limits of new filmmaking technology. Well-acted and beautifully made, The White Tiger distills the strengths of its source material into a grimly compelling drama. Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine finds the director in peak late-period form -- and benefiting from a superb cast led by Cate Blanchett.

They do this dark torment thing every Christmas, choosing a new soul to benevolently haunt each Christmas Eve. But this year, the Ghost of Christmas Present picked the wrong Scrooge. Clint Briggs has an answer for everything and turns the tables, sending Present on his own existential journey through past, present, and future. OK, so nobody really asked for a sequel to the 1983 holiday classic, but that’s not going to stop Hollywood! And, well, maybe you were a little curious to see how little Ralphie grew up.

Based on Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung's memoir, the biographical thriller recounts the horrors Ung suffered as a child under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge. With an empathetic lens framing a shocking story from the perspective of a child, First They Killed My Father is a unique war movie made with control and finesse. This taut thriller set in the remote Scottish Highlands is far from an idyllic getaway. Prepare for a full-on nerve-wringing nightmare that its protagonists are desperate to wake up from.

Hulu

Forester's The Good Shepherd and which was directed by Aaron Schneider -- features Hanks as the fictional commanding officer of a U.S. Navy vessel who must lead a convoy of Allied ships through the perilous Black Pit, a stretch of sea inaccessible to air support during the Battle of the Atlantic. For that three-day period, Hanks' Commander Ernest Krause is relentlessly tested and taunted by a "wolfpack" of U-boats, and it's on him to shepherd the ships across the Atlantic. There's little fluff to be found in this film, but the action is, to borrow an oft-used phrase in the film, "steady as you go."

A big part of that is Obvious Child, which carries some weighty themes but never once veers into melodrama, or away from a deeply smart, wonderfully funny movie. Jafar Panahi’s ironically titled 2012 documentary This Is Not a Film would be notable if only for the fact that it was smuggled out of Iran in a cake — while Panahi was under house arrest there — so that it could premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Panahi, who had been charged by Iran with making propaganda against the government and banned from making movies, has been restricted from moving freely for much of the 2010s.

The Boys in the Band (

Pete and Debbie are both about to turn 40, their kids hate each other, both of their businesses are failing, they're on the verge of losing their house, and their relationship is threatening to fall apart. After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own. In a future British dystopian society, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow the tyrannical government - with the help of a young woman.

With a stellar ensemble cast, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is both topical and full of compelling theatrical energy. The countdown to Christmas is on, and there are plenty of Christmas movies coming to the major streaming services. But it’s also prestige season in Hollywood, so you can find a number of award contenders available for streaming, too.

Alfonso Cuaron's semi-autobiographical snapshot of the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City tells a small story with staggering prowess. Let Cuaron steer you through the ups and downs of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family. His lens captures intricately beautiful scenes in an album that quietly envelopes you with wonder and grace.

Desperate, she takes a gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by middleman Youcef . As Emily continues to get shut down by companies on the up-and-up, she finds herself increasingly drawn to the lucrative, thrilling lifestyle of black-market capitalism, as well as her mentor, Youcef. As an example of representation on film, it’s a standout—the cast includes a number of deaf actors—but it’s a heart-filling knockout of a narrative, too.
